Approximately 2 billion birds have "disappeared" in recent years, and a key driver is the lack of suitable habitat. Each one of us can help birds come back by replacing a portion of their lawn with flowers. The flowers provide food to insects that rely on their pollen. Insects are a crucial food source for birds - particularly young birds that can't yet eat seeds and other adult bird food. Even hummingbirds feed their young insects, and a recent study suggests that a clutch of chickadees consumes approximately 5000 insects before fledging!
Replacing a portion of lawn with flowers helps birds, provides beauty, and reduces the amount of grass that needs cutting! Learn more by visiting with Illinois Master Naturalists during the Lawns » Blooms » Birds event at Hoerr Nursery.
