Summer is a magical season at Hoerr Nursery. The perennials unfurl in a riot of color, breathtaking in their beauty. This week we'll share steps to keeping your garden looking great!

Meet Ernesto! He heads up our perennial team, giving our plants the TLC they need to keep them looking great through the heat of summer. Here are his expert tips:
1. Water!
(You knew we were going to say that, right?)
When you're planning out a flower display, think about how much water the spot normally gets, and choose plants that favor those conditions. Even in drought tolerant gardens, deep watering whenever the soil gets dry will keep your flowers blooming.
2. Give your plants a haircut
We trim our perennials whenever the blooms slow down. This keeps them bushy, and it often brings on a new flush of flowers.
"Trimming" may sound intimidating or labor intensive, but most perennials will be happy if you lop off the spent flowers in a single cut, just like Sarah is doing in the photo above.
Note: Don't cut the spent flowers off if the plant has reached the end of its bloom season and you want it to form seed heads.
After cutting back your perennials, give them a scoop of slow release fertilizer. It won't burn your plants during the heat of summer, but it will give them the energy they need to keep flowering.
Ernesto likes organic Plant-Tone, but he notes that Osmacote and other pelleted fertilizers work well too.

4. To everything there is a season
Our plants are in constant rotation. We take anything that needs extra care back to the hoop houses, while plants that are showing off get star billing.
You can replicate this effect in your own garden by planting perennials that bloom at different times. The best bloomers change from month-to-month, so if you see nothing but green in your garden, visit us to see what looks good!

More than anything, Ernesto says that plants need love.
When you bring home a plant from Hoerr Nursery, you're investing in the very best for your garden!
