Doughnuts, not volcanoes!
Start your trees off right
April is a popular month for tree planting, as well as for adding new wood mulch to your garden. Done right, wood mulch is great for new trees. Done wrong, it can cause more harm than good.
Here's how to mulch your trees the right way:
1. Use wood mulch around your tree.
It retains water, insulates the roots from temperature swings, suppresses competing grass and weeds, improves the soil over time, and prevents lawn mower and weed whacker damage.
2. Create a "doughnut" of mulch around your tree.
Begin by building a soil berm to retain water. Cover the berm with 2-3 inches of wood mulch, leaving 6 inches of bare soil around the trunk.
3. Don't create a mulch "volcano" by piling mulch up around the tree trunk.
This can block the flow of air and water to the roots, causing disease, girdling roots, and other problems. It can also weaken the roots over time, making the tree susceptible to failure in high wind.
Mulch your tree with a "doughnut" to give it a great start!
