Fall color:
Not just for trees!
If putting in a tree isn't practical but you'd still like to enjoy the fall leaves changing in your own yard, this week's newsletter is for you! Have a look at these compact, perennial problem solvers that give you seasonal color on a smaller scale.

Perennials that put on a show
Hardy Geraniums (top left) bloom in pink, purple or lavender-blue, with some varieties re-blooming throughout the season. They provide a glorious finale to the season when their leaves transition to red and orange.

Angelina Sedum (top right) forms a fine mat of chartreuse green that turns ruddy orange in autumn. Brilliant yellow, starry flowers rise on stalks in summer.

Bishop's Hat (center left) is a shade plant that emerges bronze in spring, with showers of delicate flowers and striking fall color.

Bluestar Amsonia (top right) bears sky blue flowers in late spring, attracting butterflies. In autumn the leaves turn brilliant gold.

Bergenia (bottom left) is an excellent option for shady areas. It shoots up vivid magenta flowers in mid to late spring. In fall, the broad, shiny leaves take on hues of red or bronze.

Zagreb Coreopsis (bottom right) puts out abundant, sunny yellow flowers in early spring and summer, and puts on a firey fall color display.

Graceful Grasses
Big Bluestem (pictured left) and Little Bluestem (top right) are native grasses which both display attractive foliage during the growing season, developing red fall color.

Many of the switchgrasses are also showy in fall. Pictured is Cheyenne Sky, which develops ruby color as the season progresses.

Showy fall shrubs
The closest thing we have to a hardy palm tree in the Midwest, Tiger Eyes Staghorn Sumac (top left) is a golden-leaved native cultivar that grows into a small tree or large shrub. The leaves turn orange in autumn. Older plants form attractive clusters of garnet berries that attract winter birds.

Fothergilla (top right) adorns its bare branches with spikes of honey-scented, white, bottlebrush type flowers in spring. The intriguing powdery blue foliage takes on an impressive spectrum of fall color!

Smoke Bush (center right, also pictured below) displays colorful foliage and sprays of tiny seed pods that billow over the plant, catching the smallest breeze to create an intriguing visual effect.
The leaves turn bright red-orange in autumn.

Aronia (bottom left) has clusters of white flowers like tiny daisies in spring. Ornamental fruit follows. The refined, glossy green leaves turn brilliant red-orange shades in autumn.

Spirea (bottom right) features spring bloom, and comes in a great many colors and forms, but all of the varieties have fantastic fall color in common!
Don't let a small space stop you from enjoying fall color in your own garden. Incorporate autumn perennials, grasses and shrubs into your landscape to create a striking display of color!
