Six Shrubs for Fabulous Fall Color!

It wouldn't be fall without colorful fall leaves! While trees tend to take up a lot of our attention this time of year, shrubs are the unsung heroes of the autumn landscape. These versatile plants anchor the spectacle of fall color at ground level, complementing the towering displays of trees with their own vibrant hues.
This week we present six shrubs that put on a show!

Neat and attractive throughout the growing season, Aronia features glossy, deep green leaves that turn brilliant red-orange shades in autumn. Profuse clusters of small white flowers appear in spring, followed by attractive, inky fruits that are attractive to birds.

Sweetspire is a versatile native shrub that excels in moist conditions. It produces sprays of fragrant white flowers in early summer and boasts stunning red to reddish-purple foliage in the fall. Most varieties are low-growing, but fill in over time, making them perfect for landscape beds and rain gardens.

An exceptionally tough Illinois native, fragrant sumac can thrive in poor, dry soils once established, making it an excellent choice for low-maintenance gardens and difficult slopes. Available in both groundcover and shrub forms, fragrant sumac will spread to fill in a spot over time. The fall color is fantastic, and the fuzzy red berries provide a food source for birds.

Viburnums come in many sizes and species, including many of the best privacy shrubs! Almost all of them feature showy spring flowers followed by striking fall color and colorful berries (if two compatible varieties from the same species are in the vicinity of one another.)

A few tips to take your autumn garden to the next level:
- Shrubs with autumn color stand out in a dramatic way when planted with larger evergreen trees or evergreen shrubs as a backdrop.
- Add depth to your landscape by positioning the tallest elements in the background, such as trees or large shrubs, mid-height elements in the mid-ground, and low-growing shrubs or perennials with fall color in the foreground.
- Mix and match fall color! Choose trees and shrubs that compliment each other.
