The Delight of Herbal Tea Gardens: A Guide to Growing Your Own
There's been a lot of buzz in the gardening world about edible landscapes- planting things that you can eat alongside ornamentals. But what about plants that you can drink? That's exactly what you get with a tea garden!
Herbal tea gardens are a haven for those who appreciate the beauty of the garden and the tranquility of a soothing cup of tea.
While black tea (a type of camellia bush,) isn't hardy in our area, there are plenty of herbal tea plants that you can grow at home! In this article we'll highlight some of the plants that make a good cup of tea.
The great thing about a tea garden is that it doesn't require a lot of space, and while the plants are beautiful, they're also often rugged, deer and rabbit resistant herbs that tuck in easily between established garden plants.
For those with limited space, many of the tea herbs will also grow in containers.

Here's a list of tea garden plants, along with the type of flavor they have.
Some make good tea on their own, while others bring flavor to a blend.

Preparing herbs for tea
Herbal tea can be enjoyed hot, but it's also excellent iced! A blend of peppermint and spearmint is particuarly cooling on a warm day.
For best results, you'll want to make your teas using dried herbs. Dried leaves make more vibrant, flavorful teas, and the "vegetal" flavors of fresh leaves will disapear with drying.
Drying your own leaves for herbal teas can be as simple as cutting some stems, tying them in a bundle, and hanging them upside down in a clean, dry space, such as a closet or cupboard. Herbs can also be dehydrated, dried in the oven at 180°F or less, or even dried in in the microwave
Steeped in serenity
Growing your own plants for tea is a therapeutic escape from the hustle and bustle of life. From planting to harvest, the process offers a chance to unwind and appreciate the little things.
