The Art and Science of Trees: The Hoerr Nursery Approach to Tree Growing
At Hoerr Nursery, we pride ourselves on growing high-quality trees! Here’s a look behind the scenes at how
we do it:

Container grown trees
We offer both container grown trees and field grown trees. Our container grown trees arrive as exceptionally large and healthy bare root plants. We keep them cool, moist, and dormant in our cold storage building.
When we're ready to plant, the trees get root pruned and planted in a quality potting soil mix. Because root health is essential to growing top quality container trees, we use specialized pots that prevent circling roots and transplant shock.
We give our trees a full growing season to establish themselves, holding them over winter to ensure that they are well-acclimated to our local climate. By next spring they're ready for new homes!
Ernie inspects the rootball of a tree grown in an air-prune pot. There's no sign of the circling roots that can choke off the trunk and kill the tree. Circling roots are common in conventional tree pots.

Field grown trees
With over 50 acres of land at our disposal, we’ve set aside 13 acres on site for field grown trees, including big shade trees and evergreens. Over a period of 4-7 years, we train each tree for strong branching and
good form.
Evergreens
We take extra care to minimize double leaders on arborvitae, which can
cause winter splitting under a snow load.

Evergreen trees are dug in fall, which helps them acclimate well, and we surround the roots with topsoil rather than potting soil, which helps to prevent
them from drying out over winter.

Shade trees
Moving trees this size is a big job, but we’ve got the expertise and equipment to
handle it! Our tree spades can dig and transplant trees with trunks from
2.5” to 5.5” in diameter.
If you’re interested in purchasing one of our big trees, get in
touch to schedule a tour of the tree field.
At Hoerr nursery, we select the best trees for Central Illinois, and we pride ourselves on our carefully grown and high quality selection of trees. Visit us today to explore them for yourself, or let one of our experts help find the perfect tree for you!
