Summer Serenity: Six Unique Evergreens to Brighten Your Garden
Evergreens bring vibrancy to your garden, even in the hottest of months! This week, we're shining the spotlight on six exceptional evergreen trees and shrubs that will keep your garden looking lush and beautiful all year round. From new and unique varieties to reliable favorites, these evergreens are sure to add a touch of summer serenity to your garden.
Featured Evergreens
Compact Gem Bosnian Pine
For smaller gardens, the Compact Gem Bosnian Pine is a treasure. This slow-growing, narrow tree reaches a mature height of 12 feet and features elegant, long, dark green needles. It's perfect for adding structure and interest to tight spaces. With good resistance to pests and diseases, this trouble-free specimen is a great option for those with smaller gardens who want to enjoy an evergreen tree.
Cheer Drops Arborvitae
This unique evergreen boasts an attractive teardrop shape that adds architectural interest to any landscape. With little to no pruning required, it's a low-maintenance option that thrives in USDA zones 3-7. Use it to create handsome hedges, foundation groupings, or as a specimen plant.

Canaan Fir
With its fragrant, dark green needles and pyramidal shape, the Canaan Fir is a beautiful addition to the landscape. Its tall, spire-like shape makes it an impressive specimen or windbreak tree. Found in moist woodlands along the US/Canada boarder, Canaan Fir thrives in moist areas where other evergreens may struggle, making it an excellent problem solver plant. Holds its deep green color year round, regardless of the weather.

Cedar Rapids False Cypress
This versatile evergreen is perfect for a variety of uses, including hedges, screens, and specimen plants. Its dense, dark green foliage remains vibrant year-round, and it grows well in a range of soil conditions.

Green Giant Arborvitae
A Hoerr Nursery Tried and True tree!

This unique arborvitae is one of the fastest-growing evergreens, reaching a mature height of 30 feet. It forms a dense screen when spaced 5-6' apart, making it one of the best options for privacy and windbreaks. Unlike most other arborvitae, Green Giant is considered deer resistant.
Canadian Hemlock
A rarely seen Illinois native tree, Canadian Hemlock features delicate, lacy foliage on a slow-growing, stately tree that towers up to 60' when mature, but it can also be planted closely and kept shaped as a tall hedge. Deer resistant, this is a great problem solver for part shade! Note that Canadian Hemlock is not harmful to people or pets.
