Transform Your Lawn This Fall
Is your lawn looking a bit bare? Fall is the perfect time to overseed and topdress your grass for better health and appearance. Here’s a simple guide to get you started:
Overseeding Your Lawn
Overseeding helps fill in bare patches and thickens your grass. This makes your lawn more resilient to pests and diseases. In Central Illinois, spread cool-season grass seed between August 15 and September 15.
Steps to Overseeding:
1. Measure Your Lawn: You will need 3 lbs of seed per 1,000 sq ft.
2. Mow the Grass: Normally scalping your lawn is a bad idea, but when overseeding it helps the grass seed contact the soil and reduces competition from existing grass.
3. Rake the Lawn: Remove clippings and loosen bare spots for better soil contact.
4. Spread the Seed: Use a seed spreader for even distribution. Go over bare spots twice.
Topdressing your Lawn
Topdressing a lawn involves spreading a thin layer of material, such as compost or topsoil, over the grass to improve soil health, drainage, and nutrient retention. Compost is a great option for all soil types. Aim to rake 1/4" of material evenly over your lawn, spreading it deeper to fill in any holes. Check our materials calculator to see how much your lawn will need. We offer bulk materials at Stone Market, with delivery options available.
Water: The Key to Success!
Keep new grass moist! Water for ten minutes twice a day. (If you have a smaller lawn, a hose timer and lawn sprinkler make scheduling easy.) A light layer of straw can help retain moisture. Remember not to walk on your new grass until it's well established!

If you've never tried overseeding or topdressing your lawn, give it a go this fall! By following these steps, you'll be on your way to healthier, thicker, and more resilient grass.

Happy gardening!
Choosing the Perfect Sod
for Your Lawn
Looking to start a new lawn or repair bare patches? Hoerr Nursery offers two homegrown sod varieties: Jonathan Green's Black Beauty Fescue and Kentucky Bluegrass. These popular lawngrasses are also available as seeds, giving you flexibility in your lawn care approach.
Tallgrass Fescue: Ideal for Unirrigated Lawns
Tallgrass fescue is the top choice for lawns without irrigation systems. Its fine, deep green blades feature a glossy protective layer that retains moisture and guards against disease. Fescue resists browning during summer and can develop roots up to 4 feet deep, making it resilliant in challenging conditions.
Bluegrass: Perfect for Well-Watered Areas
Bluegrass is a dense, emerald green turf that thrives when regularly watered. The blue-green seed heads that it produces give the grass its name, rather than the color of the leaf blades. If you're a fan of MLB or NFL sports, you've seen how tough Bluegrass can be with hard use. It's the standard at many famous sports stadiums, including Illinois' own Wrigley Field.
The takeaway? Choose tallgrass fescue for low-maintenance, drought-resistant lawns, or opt for bluegrass if you're willing to provide regular watering for a vibrant, hardy turf.
