BUTTERFLIES

Profuse, canary yellow, lightly scented blooms appear in April before the leaves. 15-20' tall, 10-15' wide.

MOONGLOW SWEET BAY

Long-lasting bloom late spring to early summer, with possible sporadic re-bloom mid-summer. Creamy, long-lasting, cup-shaped flowers have a lemony scent. Bears interesting cones in fall with bright red seeds. Called "sweet bay" because the leaves may be used as a bay leaf substitute. Semi-evergreen. 15' tall and 10' wide shrub.

JANE

Bicolored petals are pinkish-purple outside, white inside. May put out some additional blooms mid-summer. Later blooms avoid spring frost damage. Yellow to bronze fall color. 10-15' tall, 8-12' wide.

WADA'S MEMORY

An excellent replacement for ornamental pear trees that have died from fireblight, Wada's Memory is covered in white, star-like early spring flowers before its leaves emerge. Unlike ornamental pear trees, the flowers have a light, pleasant fragrance. Fall leaf color is yellow. 25-35' tall and wide.

Tips for magnolia success

Choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot to plant your tree.

Water newly planted trees regularly until they are established, and provide supplemental water during periods of prolonged drought.

Magnolias like acidic soil, and will benefit from spring and fall applications of Hollytone, an organic fertilizer for acid-loving plants.

If you think you haven't got space to enjoy a magnolia tree, consider a dwarf! Dwarf and shrub magnolias can comfortably fit in a 10' diameter space.
