Autumn Bulbs For Extra Wow!

*|MC:SUBJECT|*
Double your color by planting spring bulbs among summer or fall blooming perennials! The bulbs will bloom first, and their fading foliage will vanish beneath the emerging perennial's leaves, no cleanup required! As the season progresses, the perennial plant will continue the color show.

Intrigued? Below are some proven pairings to try:
Alliums & Asters
Hyacinth & Penstemon
Daffodils & Bugbane
Daffodils & Yarrow
Daffodils & Phlox
Tulips & Hardy Geranium
Tulips, Bleeding Heart & Autumn Anemone
Tulips & Lamb's Ear
Tulips & Stonecrop Sedum

You may have some of these perennials in your garden already. To pair them with bulbs, use a narrow spade or a bulb planting auger to make planting holes for the bulbs while damaging the existing plant as little as possible.

Make Your Lawn Into An Early Spring Meadow!
Plant small, naturalizing bulbs that will delight you with their ephemeral beauty, and then vanish before the grass gets tall enough to mow! Snowdrops (top right) can bloom as early as February, followed by Scilla (bottom left) in March and Crocus (top left) & Grape Hyacinth (bottom right) in April.

Show Off In The Shade
If you have a shade garden beneath large, deciduous trees like oaks or maples, sneak in an early flower show. Spring stunners like Hyacinthoides 'Bluebells,' daffodils, hyacinth and tulips make great companions for hosta, and they can leaf out, bloom and vanish before the trees put out their leaves.

Outdo Deer
If you love tulips, but you don't love deer munching on them, fend them off early by spraying with deer repellent as soon as you see tulip leaves emerging in early spring. Deer are creatures of habit, and once they get the idea into their heads that something tastes bad, they'll typically go elsewhere to eat.
Don't want to spray? Try planting bulbs that the deer won't touch. Fritillaria (top left, bottom left, bottom right & bottom center) put on a show while putting deer off, and hungry deer will pass on narcissus (top center,) Camassia (center left,) and Allium (top right) as well. Resurrection Lily (pictured below) is an old-fashioned, deer-resistant favorite that puts out leaves in spring, but doesn't bloom until August.
Bulbs are as easy as "Dig, Drop, Done." Don't miss the chance to plant them this fall, and enjoy their magical bloom in spring!
