Autumn Shrubs And Perennials

*|MC:SUBJECT|*
If putting in a tree isn't practical but you'd still like to enjoy the fall leaves changing in your own yard, this week's newsletter is for you! Have a look at these compact, perennial problem solvers that give you seasonal color on a smaller scale. All of them are 6' tall or less, and most are much more compact than that.
The Yuki Deutzias (top left) are extremely compact shrubs with elegant pink or white spring flowers. They transform to red and burgundy shades in fall.

Bluestar Amsonia (top right) bears sky blue flowers in late spring, attracting butterflies. In autumn, the leaves turn gold with touches of purple.

Hardy Geraniums (center right) are a good option for spots with morning sun and afternoon shade. They bloom in pink, purple or lavender-blue, with some varieties re-blooming throughout the season. They provide a glorious finale to the season when their leaves transition to red and orange.

Bergenia (bottom left) is an excellent option for shady areas. It shoots up vivid magenta flowers in mid to late spring. In fall, the broad, shiny leaves take on hues of purple or bronze.

Zagreb Coreopsis (bottom right) puts out abundant, sunny yellow flowers in early spring and summer, and is unique in its fall color display.

Blue Shadow Fothergilla (top left) adorns its bare branches with spikes of honey-scented, white, bottlebrush type flowers in spring. The intriguing powdery blue foliage takes on an impressive spectrum of fall color!

Summer Wine Ninebark (top right) clusters of spirea-like flowers appear in spring. Wine-colored leaves turn scarlet in autumn.

Red Rover Dogwood (second down on right) is a colorful selection of our native silky dogwood. Spring flower clusters are small, but attractive to butterflies. Steel blue berries follow, and songbirds flock to eat them. Autumn leaves turn red-purple, revealing burgundy stems when they drop.

Early Amythyst Beautyberry (center left) has small, lavender flowers in summer, followed by showy purple fruits that adorn the branches until late fall, attracting songbirds. Leaves turn gold in autumn, contrasting beautifully with the fruit.

Little Henry Sweetspire (third down on right) grows 2' or less and withstands both wet soil and shade, although best display occurs in full sun. Fragrant white flowers cascade from the branches in a summer display, followed by a lengthy season of brilliant fall color.

Lo Scape Mound Aronia (bottom left) is another diminutive shrub, also 2' tall or less. It has clusters of white flowers like tiny daisies in spring. The inky black fruit that follows is considered a superfood, but the taste is astringent, so it's best sweetened and mixed with other fruit. The refined, glossy green leaves turn brilliant red-orange shades in autumn.

Shenandoah Switch Grass (bottom right) is just one example of how striking ornamental grasses can be in fall. The blades turn burgundy over summer, eventually becoming tawny gold with red accents in autumn.

Don't let a small space stop you from enjoying autumn in your own garden!
