Spotlight on Stellar Shrubs
Some plants show off at a certain time of year and then recede into the landscape. Others work overtime to keep your garden looking good. This week we'll highlight a few stellar shrubs that do more than their share.

You can click on the name of the shrub to learn more about it. (All except for Fizzy Mizzy- she's too new for the database!)

A treat for your garden!

Like the classic Halloween candy, this spiffy little Spirea displays several different colors. The leaves emerge scarlet, transition to tangerine, and mature to lemon. Small clusters of amethyst flowers appear over a long season, contrasting dramatically with the foliage.

A native shrub for all seasons! Tiny white flowers with pink accents cover the branches in spring, with glossy green growth in summer. The late season berries are a superfood, and can be enjoyed with sweetener in jellies, jams, juices, teas, smoothies and wines, or left to attract songbirds. In autumn the leaves turn blazing red and orange.
Comes in all sizes to fit any landscape, from the low-growing 'Ground Hug,' which maxes out at just 14" tall, to the graceful Red Chokeberry, which grows into a 6-8' tall vase-shaped shrub. In stock now at Hoerr Nursery!

Arrowwood Viburnum
The Arrowwood Viburnums are large, impressive shrubs that make good privacy hedges and outsized specimens. Fuzzy white flowerheads attract butterflies in spring, and the glossy leaves stand up to summer heat. In fall, the leaves turn shades of red and orange.

Bonus: If you plant two different varieties of the same species, they'll bear metallic blue berries in late summer that are beloved by birds! Look for 'Blue Muffin,' 'Autumn Jazz,' 'Chicago Lustre,' 'Sparkler,' or any other Viburnum dentatum

New! Fizzy Mizzy Sweetspire
New for 2022 from Proven Winners, and available now at Hoerr Nursery! Fizzy Mizzy is an Illinois native cultivar for small spaces and challenging places. It forms a tidy dome 2-3' tall and wide, and adapts to a range of conditions, including deer pressure, rain gardens and swampy spots. It's also resistant to disease and insect damage.
Masses of lightly fragrant, creamy flower spikes shoot up in early summer, attracting pollinators, and the leaves take on scarlet and purple hues in fall. Plant it now and you'll be just in time to enjoy its autumn show!

Is it okay to plant shrubs in October?
Yes! Soil temperatures drop more slowly than air temperatures. As woody plants lose their leaves, they concentrate on root growth ahead of winter. Autumn rains help them to get established. Add a deep winter mulch for good measure, and water them whenever it's dry and above freezing. That's it!

The roots will keep growing whenever temperatures are warm enough, and come spring you'll get to enjoy them as they leaf out and grow.
