PSA! Moderate Drought 2022

PSA: Watering Ahead of Winter
With hoses detached and put away, it's tempting to consign the task of watering your plants to next spring.

But in a moderate drought like this, a lack of water can kill your plants- especially trees, shrubs and perennials that were planted this year.
The roots of your plants will keep growing whenever the ground isn't frozen, and if there's no water for them to take up, the plant is likely to die.

With overnight frosts becoming more common, it can be difficult to time your watering. Here are some strategies for success:

1. Check the forecast
Take advantage of the warmest days to water with a garden hose as usual. Just remember to unscrew it from the hose bib afterward!

2. Bring out a bucket
A 5 gallon bucket with a small hole drilled in the bottom  and placed next to your plants can serve as a slow-release water reservoir. This method works best if you're only trying to water some perennials, a new shrub or a small tree (under 6').
You can lug a large watering can back and forth a few times, but it will save your back if you bring your water over in a wheelbarrow.

3. Wood mulch:
doughnuts, not volcanos
Wood mulch can protect the roots of new trees and hold moisture around the root zone longer. According to the Kansas State Extension Service, a 3-6' wide ring of wood mulch placed around a tree can almost double its growth rate!
But mulch is only beneficial when done the right way. "Volcano mulch" (shown left, above,) where the mulch is heaped up around the trunk of the tree can actually kill the tree over time. The trunk is prone to rot, and the roots struggle to get enough oxygen.
Instead of "volcano," think "doughnut" when mulching your tree. Leave a 3-6" perimeter of clear soil around the tree trunk, and layer mulch 2-4" deep out around the trunk for a distance of 3-6'.
There's another benefit to mulch "doughnuts" as well- they protect tree trunks from mowing and edging damage, which can harm or kill a tree.

Fall is for planting
If the season got away from you and you're still thinking about planting a tree, it's not too late! Unlike smaller plants, trees can be planted after they're dormant, as long as you water them whenever its dry and the ground is unfrozen while they get themselves established.
