Amaryllis as Houseplants
Growing an Amaryllis is as easy as burying the bulb 2/3rds of the way down in soil, watering it, and  letting it do its thing! You can start afresh every year with new Amaryrillis bulbs, but if you kept last year's Amaryllis as a houseplant, here's how to get it to bloom:

1. Light and warmth
Amaryllis are a tropical or subtropical plant. In their native environment, they experience a short, mild winter before blooming in late spring.
They like plenty of bright light and warmth during the growing season. You can simulate this cycle by putting an established Amaryllis plant in a bright spot for most of the year. They especially enjoy being outdoors, although they're best protected from direct sunlight.

2. Simulating Winter
Tropical winters aren't very cold, so it doesn't take much to get an Amaryllis plant into "winter mode." Just move your plant to a spot that stays around 50-55°F for 8-10 weeks, and only water it when the soil gets dry. They'll survive light frosts if sheltered, so many Amaryllis owners leave their plant outside until hard frosts arrive as part of this process. Other people keep theirs next to a basement window. Although you'll often see instructions to force Amaryllis bulbs into dormancy, this isn't necessary- they stay green year round in their native habitat.

3. Forming Flowers
After the "tropical winter" period, move your Amaryllis to a spot that's warm (70-75°F,) and bright. This will simulate spring, and stimulate flowers. Some flowering houseplant fertilizer is helpful at this point, too.
If you want Christmas blooms, bear in mind that it takes anywhere from 8-12 weeks for flowers to appear after the bulb breaks dormancy.
Enjoy your Amaryllis!
