Happy little trees:
Seeing young trees through winter
The first few years of a tree's life when it's newly planted are the most vulnerable. It needs enough water and nutrients to establish a strong root system, and it needs protection from trunk damage.
Fortunately, providing young trees with the protection they need over winter is easy! In this week's newsletter, we'll share three ways to keep your trees happy and healthy over winter.
1. Help trees put down roots
The roots of a tree spread out farther than you might imagine! As a general rule of thumb, they stretch 1.5x the height of the tree or more in all directions, concentrated in the top 1-3' of soil.
Late fall is a great time to encourage root growth. Although the leaves are gone on most trees, the roots will keep growing until the ground freezes.
Select a tree fertilizer with a good amount of phosphorous and potassium, (we can help you pick one out if you like,) and spread it evenly over the root zone instead of only near the trunk. The tree will store up the energy it gets from this dose of fertilizer, and put on healthy growth come spring.
2. Wrap tree trunks
to prevent sunscald
On winter days when the sun heats up the exposed trunks of trees, the water inside them can thaw and then re-freeze, sometimes cracking the wood and damaging the tree.
While trees with textured bark are naturally resistant to sunscald, young trees with smooth bark should be protected with a tree wrap once freezing temperatures set in.
These include:
Birches
Crabapples
Flowering Cherries
Fruit & Nut Trees
Honeylocusts
Maples
Tulip Trees
Willows
You can pick up a roll of tree wrap in our plant pharmacy. Don't forget to remove the wrap once the weather warms up in spring!
3. Protect young trees
from deer
Deer are on the move! If you haven't protected your smaller tree trunks with a deer guard yet, now is a great time. Bucks will rub their antlers on tree trunks from fall through winter, stripping off the bark and potentially killing the tree. If you have a tree with a 1-3" diameter trunk, pick up a deer guard in our Plant Pharmacy.
