Make the Grass Greener
Is your grass looking patchy? Fall is the perfect time to fix your lawn! In this newsletter, we'll talk through your options.
Fixing a Hole
There are two ways to fill in bare spots in your lawn or to add new grass: seed and sod. If you're interested in fresh cut sod, check out our Sod Installation Guide, then call Stone Market at 309-689-2513 to reserve your rolls.
We grow two types of sod: Bluegrass and Black Beauty.
Bluegrass is an exceptional turf for sprinkler irrigated lawns, while Black Beauty fescue blends display ultra deep green color even during drought. Both are fine-bladed and soft textured.
Check out our sod page to see them side-by-side and learn more.
We have both Black Beauty and Bluegrass as seed, too. Kept well-watered, fall seeded grass will thrive under a light straw mulch. To learn more about growing grass from seed, have a look at this article from the University of Iowa.

Soil Testing
When you purchase a SoilKit test from Hoerr Nursery, sending off your sample is easy! Just follow the package directions to fill the included bag with soil, put it in the included postage paid package, and pop it in the mail box.
Your results will be available 1-2 weeks later, and a Hoerr Nursery horticulturist will email you to go over them with you and make recommendations.
One issue we see often is nutrient toxicity. Nutrients can build up in the soil from routine fertilizer application, (especially on lawns,) and cause problems.
For example, excess phosphorous can prevent plants from taking up iron, even if there's plenty of it present. This is one possible cause of iron chlorosis (shown above.)
If you're planning to fertilize your lawn and garden this fall, consider getting a soil test first! The results will show you exactly what your soil does (and doesn't) need.

Make it a Festive Fall
