Every year, we wait for that enchanting moment when the leaves of the trees blaze with burnished color.

If you're considering adding some of this fall magic to your garden this year, now is a great time to plant! While deciduous trees go dormant, their roots keep growing whenever the soil is above freezing, giving them a head start in spring.
In this week's article, we'll highlight some trees with exceptional fall color. They're in stock right now, and many are on sale!

Left: Maple Trees
Widely planted for their fall season show, Maples come in brilliant red, yellow and orange, depending upon the variety.
Top center: Zelkova
A fast-growing shade tree with rich russet autumn color. The attractive, peeling bark is on full display during winter.
Bottom center: Ginkgo
Dramatic, long-lasting fall color in pure gold, creating a sunny carpet beneath the tree as the leaves fall.
Right: Black Gum, a.k.a. Tupelo Tree
A glossy-leaved tree with fiery fall color.

Trees with Spring Flowers
|
|
|
Enjoy a spectacular show twice a season with trees that display both spring flowers and fall color.
Note that Crabapple Trees and Serviceberries (listed in the next section) also bloom bountifully in spring.

Top left: Ornamental Cherry Trees are known for their celebrated show of blossoms, but they also feature excellent fall color.
Right: Yellowwood graces our native forests each year with fountains of white flowers, and closes out the season with golden leaves.
Bottom left: Tulip Tree is an unconventional specimen. The upturned flowers that give the tree its name aren't visible from the ground, although they can be enjoyed from an upper story window. The flowers attract pollinators, while the seedpods that follow are eaten by songbirds, and the leaves are a food source for the caterpillars of the Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly. The autumn leaves turn an excellent shade of burnished gold.

Some trees have showy fruit as well as autumn color. Here are three of the most interesting:

Top left: Crabapple Trees have similar traits to ornamental cherries, with the addition of small fruit that can be quite showy in some varieties. No need to worry about mess- if the birds don't eat the fruits, they simply shrivel away.
Top right: Serviceberries are compact trees with an elegant show of snowy spring flowers, followed by edible, blueberry-like fruit. Fall color is a medley of orange, red and yellow.
Bottom right: American Persimmon offers stately form, handsome, textured bark, attractive fall color, and of course, sweet persimmons. Get more than one tree if you'd like them to set fruit.
