All about periodical cicadas!

Unlike ordinary summer cicadas, this year's 17 year periodical cicadas are expected to emerge in May. They don't feed on leaves in a damaging way, but they do have the potential to damage or even kill small trees and shrubs. The female periodical cicadas will cut slits in pencil-sized branches in order to lay eggs, and this can damage young trees.
If periodical cicadas emerge in your area, you'll hear them! They're quite loud, and the males will start calling for mates within a week of emergence. At that point you'll want to net young trees with a fine mesh, securing the net around the trunk so they can't climb up underneath it. This brood should die out around mid June, so you won't need the netting for very long.
