Boost Lawn Health,
Beat Dandelions
Dandelions are often seen as pests, but they're actually nutrient-rich, and an important early resource for pollinators. If your lawn is more yellow than green, read on to learn how you can manage dandelions effectively while maintaining a healthy garden.
A Brief History
Did you know that dandelions were brought to the new world as a source of food and medicine? Packed with vitamins A, C, and K, plus iron, calcium, and potassium, their somewhat bitter leaves are comparable to kale in terms of nutritional value. They remained a cherished spring green until post-WWII herbicide marketing redefined them as weeds. The recent proliferation of dandelion recipes on the internet suggests that many have developed a new appreciation for these maligned leafy greens.

Building a Resilient Lawn
For those who prefer fewer dandelions, the most sustainable strategy is to change the conditions that encourage them. Here's how:
Start With Your Soil
Dandelions flourish in acidic soil, so start by testing your soil’s pH with a simple kit (we have several different options available.) If results show acidity, apply lime, or a pH-adjusted lawn fertilizer to gradually make your soil more alkaline.
Bare or thin spots in your lawn are prime real estate for dandelions. If these spots are caused by compaction or poor drainage, aerate the lawn and topdress with compost. (We can help with this.) Aeration and topdressing improves soil structure and organic matter, creating better conditions for grass to thrive. Overseed thin areas, or lay sod in damaged spots. Dense grass growth will naturally crowd out weeds.
Set your mower blade higher to let grass grow taller—it will shade the soil, and because dandelion seeds need light to germinate, it will help to discourage them. Leave grass clippings after mowing to return nutrients and organic matter to the soil, further boosting lawn health.
An Ounce of Prevention
Stop dandelions before they sprout using a pre-emergent herbicide, which creates a barrier to block seed germination. For organic lawns, corn gluten can be effective, but requires repeated applications. Avoid using pre-emergents in areas where you plan to seed new grass.
Dandelions are perennials. For plants that have overwintered, iron-based herbicides offer a targeted solution. These treatments eliminate dandelions without harming surrounding grass. Eliminating established dandelions before they have a chance to seed will help to control the population long-term.
By focusing on soil health, lawn density, and proactive weed management, you can create an environment where dandelions struggle to compete—and your grass thrives.
