Autumn Trees To Transform Your Yard

*|MC:SUBJECT|*
Bring the magic of autumn home to your yard with these seven stellar trees for fall leaf color!
1. Afterburner Black Gum
Height and Spread: 35’x20’
Fall color: Bright Red
Growth Rate: Slow

An excellent compact shade tree!

The glossy leaves emerge red in spring,  darken to forest green, and transform to scarlet in autumn. Bears inconspicuous, small, black fruits that are attractive to a variety of birds. Tolerates poorly drained soils and standing water.

2. Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry

Height and Spread: 15-25’x15-25’
Fall color: Orange-Red
Growth Rate: Medium

Serviceberry puts on a show throughout the growing season!

A hybrid of two Illinois natives. Ticker-tape white flowers in spring give way to blueberry-like edible fruit – very attractive to birds!

3. Autumn Gold Ginkgo
Height and Spread:
40-50’x25-30’
Fall color: Clear Yellow
Growth Rate: Slow

Upright shape and unique leaves make a bold statement in the landscape. Autumn color is dramatic and long-lasting. When the leaves do fall, they come down all at once, making a golden carpet on the ground.

4. Emerald City Tulip Tree
Height and Spread: 55’x25’
Fall color: Gold
Growth Rate: Fast

Unique shade tree with enormous wildlife value!

Greenish-yellow upturned flowers attract pollinators and hummingbirds. Unique seed pods are a food source for Cardinals, Goldfinches, Carolina Chickadees,  and Purple Finches. The leaves are a food source for Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly caterpillars.

5. Red Oak

Height and Spread: 50-75’x 50-75’
Fall color: Burgundy
Growth Rate: Fast

A truly magnificent tree!

Important food source for native wildlife such as deer, squirrels, and turkey. Truly an investment in the future, these trees may live up to 500 years.

6. Redpointe Maple

Height and Spread: 45’x30’
Fall color: Bright Red
Growth Rate: Fast

Pest, disease and chlorosis resistant!

Symmetrical, pyramidal form makes it a good shade tree for smaller landscapes.

7. Rising Fire American Hornbeam

Height and Spread: 30’x15’
Fall color:
Yellow, Orange & Red
Growth Rate: Slow

Can't decide on your favorite fall color? Enjoy them all at once!

Hornbeam is a native understory tree with attractive, rounded form and exceptionally strong structure. Trunk develops an interesting fluted look with age. Bears unusual winged nutlets that attract birds, including the American Goldfinch.

Since 1952 citizen scientists have tracked the monarch butterfly migration, providing invaluable information to researchers.

You can take part in this ongoing effort.

On Saturday, September 12th, join us at Hoerr Nursery for an event marking the monarch's annual migration back to Mexico.

Kid's Hour: 11am-12pm
We'll kick off with a reading of 'Señorita Mariposa' and a discussion of the monarch's migration to Mexico, plus a chance to view the lifecycle of the butterfly up close.

Monarch Tagging: 12pm-2pm
Cost is $1 per butterfly. All ages welcome!
