Heavenly Hydrangeas!
Summer is hydrangea season! If you're looking to plant one of these beauties in the perfect spot, read on.

Hydrangeas for Full Sun
If you'll be growing your hydrangea in a hot spot, pick out one of the Panicle Hydrangeas. Water them regularly and they'll be trouble free and generous bloomers all summer long in spots with full or afternoon sunlight. They also change color as the pointed panicles of flowers mature!

Dappled Sunlight
Our native smooth hydrangea is naturally found in moist, low-lying spots in the dappled shade of Illinois woodlands. The flowers come in pink or white, and newer varieties are bred to hold the flower heads on strong, upright stems.
Problem Solvers for a Northern Exposure
Given 4-6 hours of sunlight, Mophead Hydrangea, Tuff Stuff Hydrangea and Oakleaf Hydrangea will all thrive on the north side of a house, which is traditionally a challenging spot. They benefit from the longer period of dormancy that a northern exposure induces, and are less likely to loose their flower buds by coming out of their winter hibernation prematurely.

Here are details for each of these varieties:

Marvelous Mophead Hydrangeas
The quintessential hydrangea, mopheads (Hydrangea macrophylla,) are known for showy spheres of flowers or enormous lacecaps. Color is determined by soil pH, except in white-flowered varieties. Site with morning sunlight and afternoon shade. The most recent varieties can bloom on new wood even if the previous year's buds were killed over winter.

Tuff Stuff Hydrangeas
Tuff Stuff Hydrangeas (Hydrangea serrata) are so similar to Mopheads that they were once considered a subspecies. They bear lacecap flowers that vary by soil pH. Autumn foliage turns bronze red. Site with morning sunlight and afternoon shade.

Intriguing Oakleaf Hydrangeas
Oakleaf Hydrangeas (Hydrangea quercifolia) are magnificent when they're planted in the right spot. They're flexible about the type of sunlight they receive as long as they get regular water and a deep, year round mulch. They have big, attractive leaves that turn a striking shade of mahogany in fall, and their peeling bark adds interest to the winter garden. The flowers grow in showy spikes that start out white, becoming pink as they mature.
