Beyond Ordinary: Rare and New
at Hoerr Nursery

Right now, we've got a limited selection of new and rare perennials! We'll spotlight some selections by the garden spot where they're most at home. Many of these are one-offs that we were fortunate enough to find, so get them before they're gone!

Plants for Dry Spots

Here's a collection from the arid places in the world. If you've got a sunny sandy spot, rock garden, or a corner out of reach from the garden hose with good drainage that needs jazzing up, these plants will do the trick!

Pictured left: Holy Smoke Big Bluestem (Andropogon gerardii ‘Holy Smoke’)

New for 2021! A cultivar of a Great Plains prairie grass. Foliage has a silvered, smokey hue, with pink, red and purple accents.

Top right: Pink Cotton Lamb’s Ear (Stachys lavandulifolia)
Native to dry, rocky slopes in the Caucus Mountains

Bottom right: Northern Dragonhead (Dracocephalum ruyschiana)
A Russian native, hardy to –40°F!

Want more inspiration for that dry spot? This summer we're offering four free garden plans, including a drought tolerant design!

Adaptable Perennials

Each of the plants in this second group of new perennials and rarities prefers a unique set of garden conditions, so if you were disappointed that you haven't got a spot for the plants above, one of these might suit you better.

Pictured top left: Peacock Butterfly Tipped in Blue Siberian Iris (Iris sibirica ‘Peacock Butterfly Tipped in Blue’)

This extraordinary, compact variety of Siberian Iris features bicolor blooms in blue and yellow! Among the most adaptable of garden plants, Siberian Iris will withstand wet soil, deer and rabbits, which is why you'll find it included in our free deer & rabbit resistant garden plan!

Bottom left: Purple Lanceleaf Loosestrife (Pulsatilla rubra)
Lanceleaf Loosestrife is an Illinois native that deserves more widespread planting. It adapts to a variety of environments, making it very easy to grow.

Top right: Red Pasque Flower (Pulsatilla rubra)
These gorgeous, wine-red flowers appear in spring, sometimes while snow is still on the ground! Ferny gray foliage remains attractive all year. Likes an unusual combination of rich, very-well drained soil and moderate but consistent water.

Bottom Right: Night Thunder Pseudata Iris  (Iris pseudata 'Yarai')
The Pseudata Irises are new hybrids that marry the vigor of yellow flag with the spectacular patterning of Japanese Iris. Provide afternoon shade and regular water in the garden, or grow in full sun in up to 6" of water.

In addition to the plants profiled here, we've got a smaller number of other rarities too much in short supply to mention here. If you're interested, come out and browse our selection. Once they're gone, they're gone!

Last Call: Prevent Bagworm Damage

If you've seen these cone-like creatures on any of your plants, it's important to act now before they get large enough to seriously damage or destroy the plant they're feeding on. During the juvenile stage (pictured in the top center of this photo) they can be successfully treated for. By the time they reach the adult stage (pictured above on the right,) they're no longer vulnerable to treatment.

They have a wide-ranging diet, but check over arborvitae especially carefully, as it's one of their favorite foods. You'll find details for dealing with bagworms halfway down this page

No matter what kind of gardening challenges you encounter this summer, we're here for you! Send a photo of your plant problem to expert@hoerrnursery.com, or come in for a visit. Our team of experts is here to help!
