Geraniums Demystified!

Geraniums are a funny group. The word "geranium" is used to refer to two completely different kinds of plants!

The Annual Geraniums
Botanically called "Pelargoniums," the annual Geraniums are a fascinatingly varied group.

Zonal Geraniums
The quintessential Geranium! Zonals are big, bright bloomers. Their soft, fuzzy leaves have a characteristic scent when brushed.
In some varieties, the leaves are the main attraction.

Plant zonal geraniums in a well-drained spot.
They need at least half a day of sunlight.

You can get Zonal Geraniums in red, pink, peach and white.

Ivy Geraniums
The elegant trailing Geranium of Europe, beloved in window boxes. More shade tolerant than the Zonal Geranium.
Typically available in red, pink and white.

Interspecific Geraniums
For hot spots, pick one of these Zonal-Ivy hybrids. They feature showy blooms in a wide range of color, great heat tolerance, and a semi-trailing habit.

Scented Geraniums
Grown for their scented leaves, although the bicolor blooms are attractive in their own right. The leaves are used in perfumery and cooking.

Perennial Geraniums:
The Genuine Article
True Geraniums are easy care perennials. They flower in sun or part shade, bearing elegant masses of flowers in shades of white and violet.
Despite the confusing re-use of their name, they aren't related to the annual "geraniums" at all.

Clear as mud, right?

The bottom line is that no matter what kind of Geranium you plant, you'll get something beautiful!

Our no-worries warranty allows you to plant with confidence. We understand that sometimes plants don't make it. We make replacements and exchanges easy.

What our warranty covers:

Trees & Shrubs
Perennials
Groundcovers & Vines

Winter-hardy plants purchased at full retail price or retail sale price are eligible for a one-time complete replacement if they fail within the first year. Refunds cannot be given in cash. Clearance-priced (garage sale) items are not warrantied. Items purchased under a contractor account are covered separately.
For retail trees that were planted by Hoerr Nursery, the labor to replace a warrantied tree is also covered by the warranty.
If you suspect that your plant has died, don't dig it up! Doing so may void your warranty.

Instead, take a photo of the plant. You can email the photo to us at expert@hoerrnursery.com, or show it to one of our experts in person. To simplify the process, please bring your sales receipt at the time of your visit.

Along with the photo, give us as many details as you can about the plant that you lost. We want to help you succeed with your replacement!

In Memory of
John Henry Hoerr

John Henry Hoerr, 92, of Edwards, passed away with his family by his side on Monday, May 9, 2022 at his home. Along with two of his brothers, John was an owner of D.A.Hoerr and Sons, Inc. in Peoria.

The Hoerr Nursery name has a long history in Peoria. His father, David August Hoerr, the son of German immigrants, began delivering topsoil in his truck and doing other landscaping jobs in 1926. The business continues the family tradition today under the third generation.

John developed the Hardy Turf sod business in the early 1970's. His stone and masonry work is found all throughout the Peoria area.
