Small Wonders:
Shrubs for Compact Spaces

Got an awkward, narrow flower bed? An empty spot that needs some oomph? Tuck in one of these problem-solving gems!

Most of these shrubs are 3' tall and wide or less. Click the name of the plant you're interested in for details.

A Touch of the Blues:
Blue Star Dwarf Juniper

Blue Star Dwarf Juniper brings blue foliage within reach of gardeners short on space. Combine it with plants that have red and/or gold foliage for especially exciting color contrast!

Tiny Cherry Blossoms: Deutzia

The Deutzias are small shrubs that make a big impact! Frothy flowers reminiscent of cherry blossoms cover them in spring, either pink or white, depending on the variety. In fall, the leaves turn burgundy. Chardonnay Pearls (shown above) maintains a fountaining habit and lemon-lime color all season long.

Black Chokecherry:
Sweet Shrub & Superfood

Black Chokecherry is an underutilized shrub with interest throughout the growing season! The varieties Ground Hug and Low Scape Mound will both fit into tight spots in the landscape. Withstands a wide range of growing conditions!

In spring, Black Chokecherry is covered in clusters of tiny white flowers that mature to small berries in summer. In autumn the leaves turn fiery red.

The fruits are edible and very high in antioxidants, but they taste astringent out of hand and are best cooked and sweetened before being eaten. They're very popular with birds as-is, though!

Get the gorgeous bloom of a Butterfly Bush in a truly tiny package with the Pugster series!

Available in a range of colors, these dwarf shrubs are hardy, generous bloomers with chunky flower spikes that really stand out.

Just as with the full-sized Butterfly Bushes, it's important to use root stimulator when you plant them, so that they don't divert all their energy to the spectacular flower show and forget to form roots ahead of winter.

They're Cute
When They're Little...
Slowmound Mugo Pine

Species Mugo Pines were widely planted for their verdant dome of evergreen needles, but they eventually grow to be big, sprawling bushes! Slowmound Mugo Pine is a true dwarf, topping out at just 3' tall and 4' wide. And, as the name suggests, it gets to those dimensions very slowly.

Need a smaller evergreen? Gem Box and Strongbox Inkberry Holly look similar to Boxwood, but they grow faster, and stay 2-3' tall and wide. Unlike Boxwood, they need to be planted in a spot where they'll get regular water.

Better than Boxwood:
Gem Box Inkberry Holly

Need an even smaller evergreen? Gem Box Inkberry Holly looks similar to Boxwood, but grows faster, and stays 2-3' tall and wide.

Note that Inkberry Holly  needs to be planted in a spot where it will get regular water.

There are Hydrangeas for sun and Hydrangeas for shade, but how about Hydrangeas for small spots? Here are some great options:

Shade:
The Let's Dance series
The Tuff Stuff series

Evergreen Arborvitae

These cute green globes maintain their shape without pruning. Both Danica and Mr. Bowling Ball grow to less than 3' tall and wide.

Dwarf Barberries come in a kaleidoscope of color. Mix and match them for dramatic effects!

Thorns make Barberries an ideal security plant, and deter browsing by deer and rabbits. Barberries also withstand drought and clay.
